As the year wraps up & we are full swing in to holiday season, here’s your reminder: YOU ARE ENOUGH. Your best effort will look different from day to day, and that’s okay! When you let go of the need to be perfect, to achieve more, and to “do it all,” you create space to celebrate yourself, every single day—not just on race day or when there’s a time clock running. Try writing it on your mirror, setting it as your phone background—whatever you need to remind yourself, daily during this season where life gets busy & the calendar gets full.
Here are some practical tips for navigating the holiday season while keeping your goals in mind and being kind to yourself:
1. Set Realistic Expectations for Your Training
During the holidays, routines tend to shift, and that’s perfectly normal. Embrace the idea of “maintenance mode” if needed, focusing on consistency rather than intense goals or gains. This mindset can relieve the pressure of being 'perfect' and help you stay committed with your love for movement without overcommitting or burning out.
2. Loop Your Family and Loved Ones Into Your Goals
Communication is key! Let your loved ones know when you have a run or workout scheduled. A simple “Hey, I won’t be available at [day/time] because I have a workout scheduled—can we do brunch or open presents a bit later?” often helps them understand and respect your commitment. When they know why it matters to you, they’re more likely to support your goals.
3. Make it a Group Effort!
Who says your workouts have to be solo? See if friends or family want to join you for a walk, a gym session, or even a run. This might mean you have to adjust your pace/expectations and make it about the time you have TOGETHER vs. on your own. You never know—your commitment might inspire someone else to start their own health journey!
4. Communicate with Your Coach
At Strides for Strength it is SO important to us that our athletes training plans fit in to their life vs. trying to fit their life in to a training plan. You want your workouts to feel enjoyable, not like a chore. If you’re traveling or planning family days, let your coach know so they can adjust your schedule in a way that works for you and doesn’t add stress.
5. Prioritize Hydration
Always bring your water bottle wherever you go! #emotionalsupporthydration Staying hydrated will keep your energy up, aid digestion, and overall help you feel better and make better decisions with less brain fog. Hydration is a small action with big payoffs, especially during a busy season.
6. Practice Mindful Eating
Enjoy your holiday meals fully. Instead of thinking about food in terms of “earning it” through workouts, allow yourself to savor each meal and listen to your hunger and fullness cues. When you’re present with each bite, you’re more likely to feel satisfied without feeling the need to overindulge or restrict.
7. Take Small Breathers to Keep Stress in Check
This season can be busy, so finding moments to pause can help keep stress at bay. Take five minutes in the morning to stretch or breathe deeply, or go for a short walk after meals. Small mindfulness practices can create a sense of calm and balance amid the holiday hustle.
8. Look at Your Schedule Ahead of Time
If your workouts keep you feeling good, make time for them. If resting and taking time off feels better, honor that, too. Balance your workouts with time to be fully present during holiday celebrations.
9. Ask Yourself What You Need
Listen to what your body and mind need most. When you take time to check in with yourself, you’ll show up better for those around you, too.
10. Be Rigid in Your Goals but Flexible in Your Approach
It’s okay to miss a run, indulge a bit more, or sleep in. Being flexible doesn’t make you a bad athlete. Letting go of guilt and shame creates a positive space for what should be an enjoyable outlet in your life.
The holiday season is a time for joy, connection, and self-care. By remembering these tips, you’ll head into the new year feeling balanced and fulfilled. Remember, it’s not about being perfect—it’s about being present, honoring your goals, and allowing yourself the grace to do what feels right for YOU.
We wish you a happy, healthy holiday season
